Several product categories dominate exports from China to Kenya, all of which are subject to strict quality and conformity controls:
- Flat rolled iron and nonalloy steel products (HS 7208): USD 202.1 million
- Telephones and smartphones (HS 8517): USD 173.9 million
- Railway and tramway goods wagons (HS 8606): USD 133.8 million
- Worn clothing and textiles (HS 6309): USD 110.6 million
- Plastics and resins (HS 3907): USD 87.2 million
Among these, smartphones and worn clothing are particularly sensitive categories due to consumer safety, quality standards, and regulatory scrutiny at Kenyan ports of entry.
Why PVOC Compliance Is Critical
The PVOC Programme is a mandatory requirement enforced by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Products shipped without a valid Certificate of Conformity (COC) face:
- Shipment delays at port
- Heavy penalties and demurrage costs
- Reexport or destruction of goods
For high volume exporters of electronics and second-hand clothing, non-compliance can quickly erode margins and damage customer relationships.
